Reiki: Exploring the Psychic-Medium Connection

Reiki is widely known as a gentle energy healing technique, used to promote balance, relaxation, and wellness. But for some practitioners, Reiki can unlock something deeper, an expansion of intuitive sensitivity, heightened spiritual awareness, and even the ability to receive messages from beyond.

This isn’t a universal experience, nor is it the goal for every practitioner. Yet, countless Reiki healers, myself included, report that over time, their work with energy has subtly (or dramatically) opened psychic channels, allowing them to sense things they hadn’t before: subtle impressions, emotional echoes, or messages that seem to come from spiritual guides, ancestors, or even the souls of those who have passed on.

Reiki works by attuning a practitioner to universal life force energy. Over time, this repeated connection to higher frequencies may begin to refine the practitioner’s intuitive and energetic perception. Here’s how:

  • Chakra alignment: Regular Reiki practice clears and balances the chakras—especially the third eye and crown—enhancing intuitive vision and spiritual receptivity.
  • Energetic attunement: During attunements (especially Reiki Level II and Master levels), some practitioners experience a “spiritual activation” that shifts their awareness into deeper, more subtle realms.
  • Stillness and openness: The meditative quality of Reiki allows the mind to quiet, which can create space for subtle impressions and intuitive downloads to arise naturally.

Though often used interchangeably, being psychic and being a medium are not the same.

  • A psychic picks up on energy fields, past, present, and potential future. They may sense a person’s emotional state, energetic blocks, or life path insights.
  • A medium, on the other hand, serves as a conduit between the living and the spirit world, receiving messages from deceased loved ones, guides, or other non-physical beings.

Every medium is psychic, but not every psychic is a medium. Reiki practitioners who begin receiving messages or impressions may initially feel psychic, but some later discover they’re picking up communication from the spirit realm, thereby blurring the boundary.

Why does this happen? Many Reiki practitioners report profound experiences during sessions that seem to go beyond typical energy healing:

  • Sensing presences in the room (guides, spirits, or loved ones of the client)
  • Receiving mental images, words, or emotional impressions that have no obvious source
  • Knowing things about a client without being told—especially related to their past or loved ones who’ve passed
  • Feeling “guided” during a session by a presence that seems external but benevolent

In some cases, these experiences evolve over time into clearer spirit communication. For others, it remains subtle or symbolic, more feeling-based than literal. Not every Reiki healer becomes a medium, and that’s perfectly okay. The pathway unfolds differently for each person, depending on their soul’s purpose and sensitivity.

I´ll be the first to confirm that the idea of receiving messages from beyond can be exhilarating, but it also requires discernment, grounding, and ethical awareness. It is also downright spooky at first. This definitely isn’t for everyone, and not all Reiki practitioners will become mediums. Some are here to facilitate healing, not channel spirits. Just because I receive impressions doesn’t mean I must act on or share them. Practicing discretion is vital and developing this sensitivity responsibly require training, mentorship, and energetic protection practices. Spiritual sensitivity is a gift, but one that asks for integrity and intention, and in this age of social media, there are far too many who abuse this gift.
