I absolutely love Christmas, all the trimmings and the harmony it brings into the house after what has been a turbulent year. It’s the perfect excuse to go overboard with candles and lights, make abundance and vibrancy the focal points, and immerse myself in a little fantasy. Nevertheless, I would not be true to myself (or to you, dear reader) if I did not share some Feng Shui tips for Christmas Eve decorations, especially as you contemplate how and where to place the more auspicious items to enhance joy, harmonious relationships, abundance, and prosperity. Incorporating Feng Shui principles to align your space with these ancient principles for a magical and meaningful Christmas Eve.

1. Setting the Table for Good Relationships and Abundance
The dining table is the heart of any Christmas celebration, representing abundance and the bond between loved ones. Here’s how to set the table with Feng Shui in mind:
Choose a Round or Oval Table
A round or oval table symbolises equality and unity, encouraging smooth communication among guests. If you have a rectangular table (like I do), soften the edges with a beautiful tablecloth or rounded placemats.
Use Warm and Balanced Colours
Incorporate red (for passion and warmth), gold (symbolising abundance), and green (for growth and renewal). Balance these bold hues with neutral tones to create a harmonious feel.
Add Symbols of Abundance
- Fresh Flowers: Place a centrepiece with red or white flowers like roses or poinsettias, symbolising joy and vitality. Add evergreens for longevity.
- Candles: Opt for pairs of candles in red or gold to encourage balanced relationships. Keep the flames low and steady for a calm atmosphere.
- Fruit Bowls: Fill bowls with oranges, apples, or pomegranates, as they signify prosperity and good luck.
2. Decorating Your Entrance to Welcome Positive Energy
The entrance to your home is the gateway for energy flow. A well-decorated entryway ensures you welcome wealth and happiness.
Hang a Wreath with Intention
Choose a wreath with natural elements like pine, holly, or berries. Add red or gold ribbons to enhance the energy of joy and abundance. If possible, place a small mirror behind the wreath to “double” the positive energy entering your home. I tend more towards the fresh wreaths rather than the artificial ones due to the natural energies that they attract. It is best if you have the time or the inclination to make one yourself, because you can weave the intentions into it, however, you can pick up a fresh one from the market or florist as well.
Light the Pathway
Use fairy lights or lanterns to illuminate your walkway. Light symbolises clarity and warmth, inviting good energy and ensuring your guests feel welcome.
Place a Lucky Symbol by the Door
Add a pair of small figurines (like reindeer or angels) on either side of the doorway to symbolise balance and protection. Ensure your doormat is clean and inviting, as clutter here can block positive energy. My mother was big on angels and had a phenomenal collection over the years which were always a joy to see year after year. It was more than just the religious symbolism of it all, but a reflection of her generous and angelic soul.
3. Avoiding Dead Energy in Your Christmas Décor
Feng Shui emphasizes the importance of keeping energy vibrant and alive. Here’s how to prevent stagnant or “dead” energy from lingering in your space:
Avoid Overusing Artificial Decorations
While some artificial decorations can be practical, too many plastic or synthetic items may create lifeless energy. Balance them with fresh greenery, flowers, or natural materials like wood, pinecones, or bamboo. This one is something I struggle with each year. For practical reasons I have an artificial tree but in order to balance the dead energy, I make sure to have a lot of potted plants indoors as well (another excuse to add more fairy lights).
Replace Broken or Worn-Out Décor
Cracked ornaments, burned-out lights, or chipped decorations can harbour negative energy. Repair or replace these items to ensure your space radiates positive vibes. I know how you feel about decorations with a lot of sentimental value that have been around for over 30 or 40 years. At some point, however, some of them need to be retired and in terms of Feng Shui, it is best to do so.
Declutter and Dust
Before decorating, clear out any old or unused items, especially from spaces like the living room, dining area, and entrance. Dust and clutter trap stagnant energy, while a clean and open space promotes flow and renewal.
Ensure Fresh Air Flow
Open windows (even briefly) to circulate fresh air and let out stale energy. Add essential oils or natural scents like cinnamon, pine, or orange to invigorate the atmosphere.

4. Lucky Foods to Serve on Christmas Eve
What you serve on Christmas Eve can also bring good fortune and blessings. According to Feng Shui, certain foods symbolise wealth, happiness, and good health.
Golden Foods for Prosperity
- Roasted Chicken or Turkey: Symbolizes abundance and togetherness.
- Dishes with Pumpkin or Squash: The golden color represents wealth and nourishment.
- Dumplings or Pies: Their round shape signifies completeness and unity.
Sweet Treats for Harmony
- Chocolate Coins: Represent wealth and are a fun addition to the dessert table.
- Cinnamon Desserts: Enhance warmth and attract positive energy. (My extra tip – add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the bucket of cleanser when you mop the floor! And before all your guests arrive, place a teaspoon of cinnamon in your hand, stand at the main entrance facing inwards and blow the cinnamon towards the house).
Citrus Fruits for Good Luck
Oranges and tangerines are considered auspicious in Feng Shui. Include them as table décor or serve them as a refreshing dessert.
5. Symbols of Abundance and Strong Relationships
Feng Shui is all about symbols. Use them thoughtfully to enhance the energy of your celebration.
The Power of Pairs
When decorating, arrange items in pairs to represent balance and harmonious relationships. For example, two candles, two stockings, or two ornaments on a centerpiece can amplify this energy.
Use Crystals and Bells
- Rose Quartz: Place on your table or near the seating area to promote love and harmony.
- Bells or Chimes: Hang bells on your tree or near the door to attract good fortune and clear negative energy.
Flowing Water Features
If you have a small indoor fountain, place it near the entrance or dining area to signify the flow of wealth and happiness into your home. Ensure the water flows inward, not outward, to keep the good energy within.
6. Enhance Togetherness with Thoughtful Seating
Where your guests sit can affect the flow of energy and conversation.
- Avoid sharp edges: Arrange chairs so no one sits with their back to a door or in direct line with sharp corners.
- Balance opposites: Mix personality types around the table to maintain balanced energy and lively interaction.
Merry Christmas!
